A proper fit can mean all the difference in how you feel before, during, and after a ride. For competitive purposes, a proper fit allows an athlete to harness all the mechanical advantages of his/her bicycle to result in a greater power output and ultimately, greater performances and results. A proper fit also helps to establish safety on your bicycle, whether you are racing or simply cruising around the block with your friends or family. Chronic cycling injuries to your back, neck, shoulders, wrists, ankles, knees, and feet are commonly associated with improper fit and can have a long-term impact on how those body parts function on or off the bike. Furthermore, comfort is always important so that you can ride your bike knowing that you are enjoying it and feel that you are in total control throughout the ride.

The following diagram illustrates the relationship of Fit in terms of Safety, Comfort, and Performance, and how all 3 elements can exist at one time, but at varying degrees. Our goal is to get as close to the “Sweet Spot” as possible.

Many philosophies on bicycle fitting exist. There is no single solid fit solution for every cyclist because some fit protocols are very calculation-based, while others focus on flexability and performance orientation. Two cyclists with the same height, weight, physiology, and muscular-skeletal make-up will fit differently on the same bike by a difference as minor as shoe size or as major as a previous nagging knee injury. Ultimately, customer feedback becomes a critical part of the fit process; therefore, Pure Energy will work with you even after the initial fit and bicycle set-up to suggest follow-up adjustments.

Cleat and Shoe Fitting

The most critical point of contact is your feet to your pedals, applying all the torque from your legs and cranks, to create an efficient and powerful pedal stroke. Improper cleat placement on your shoe and relative strike point to your pedals can squander critical watts from each pedal stroke. In addition, poor pedal form and follow-through can cause pain and discomfort to your hips, knees, and feet!

Proper installation and assessment of your cleat position can optimize the strike point and eliminate arch, knee, and hip pain.

Insoles personalized to your feet can significantly reduce arch pain and other painful symptoms related to neuroma.

Minimal gains in multiple areas related to your feet and cleat can render significant gains in power output and comfort. Imagine 4%-5% added efficiency to your pedal stroke at 80 rpm for a 2 hour ride (120 min) benefits each of your 9,600 pedal strokes! You will conserve more of your energy for that final sprint, big climb, or last 20 miles of your century ride!
